THE date for this year's World Poohsticks Championships has been announced.

The 2018 competition will return to the little bridge over the Windrush at Witney's Langel Common on Sunday, June 3.

Organisers have also revealed they are once again working with Witney Music Festival and hoping to announce musical acts soon.

Registration for teams is hoped to open this month or next and more details are set to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Richard Gray of the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires, which organises the annual championships, said: "This year's event is going to be the same fun and frolics as last year but with more glorious sunshine.

"It will once again be the perfect chance for adults and children to play this classic traditional game."

The contest, which attracts people from across the UK and beyond, sees competitors drop brightly-coloured sticks off one side of the bridge and 'race' them to the other side.

The World Poohsticks Championships was held at Day’s Lock on the Thames at Little Wittenham, near Didcot, for 31 years.

But in January 2015 the rotary club announced it would not be able to hold the event there that year.

The contest had grown so popular, attracting 700 competitors each year and more spectators, that the club said there was no longer enough space.

Organisers put out an appeal with the Oxford Mail and within weeks Cogges Manor Farm offered the use of a bridge over the River Windrush on Langel Common.
