A CAFE manager has said ongoing work outside the Westgate Centre is putting off her customers and wants it completed as soon as possible.

The £440m revamped shopping complex opened on October 24, but construction work around the centre is still taking place and contractors have not yet completed laying paving stones near the entrance.

Some of the the work is taking place near the entrance of the Art Cafe in New Road, while paving slabs can be seen piled up outside the Jo Malone perfume store.

Andreea Baciu, 29, manager of the Art Cafe, said she was told a month ago that the work to lay paving would be completed in seven to 10 days.

She added: "I want the work to finish as soon as possible because it is putting off customers.

"They have put up metal fencing near the entrance and the noise of the drilling goes on for a long time.

"At first, when the Westgate opened, they put black asphalt down, but now they have dug it up to replace it with more expensive stonework.

"It's not a question of compensation because the workmen come here for lunch – they have been good customers – it is just time the work was finished."

Last month bus company bosses tweeted to say that Queen Street would have to close while more construction work took place.

Oxford Bus Company managing director Phil Southall revealed there had been a proposal to close the street for three weeks to allow some work to be completed.

But following talks with Westgate Centre managers, the proposed closure did not go ahead.

As well as construction taking place near the main entrance to the centre, opposite Bonn Square, there is also work in other locations, including Old Greyfriars Street.

A taxi rank and turning circle for taxis is being created in the street.

Oxford Mail:

Last week Colin Ridler, 65, who uses a mobility scooter, urged centre operator Westgate Oxford Alliance to complete work on the taxi rank to make his journeys to and from the centre easier.

He has to get dropped off in St Aldate's, as taxis are not allowed to drop off passengers in Norfolk Street, close to the Westgate, as the street is reserved for buses.

A spokeswoman for Westgate Oxford Alliance said it was difficult to give 'set dates' for the completion of work as there was a variety of different work taking place.

She said: "The pavement works in Old Greyfriars Street will be completed by February 23."
