UPDATE - Sign to be corrected as Highways England issues apology

YESTERDAY'S revelation that a new sign on the A34 bears the name of 'Whitney' and not 'Witney' certainly raised a few eyebrows.

It also prompted a plethora of jokes and questions on social media over how a mistake like that could be allowed to happen.

The BBC has now waded into the debate, taking its roving reporters around the town to ask people what they think of the misspelling of their home town's name.

The jocular piece is accompanied by a video on BBC's Oxford's Facebook page, which the eagle-eyed will notice also contains a glaring Witney-based blunder.

'What does the village of Witney have in common with singing superstar Whitney Houston?', it asks.

The 27,000+ people of Witney will know, of course, that they live in a town.

The story also prompted a series of Twitter exchanges, with various councils getting involved.

West Oxfordshire District Council pointed the finger at Oxfordshire County Council, but the authority was quick to point out the sign error was not its fault.
