£20m leisure plan for Oxford

Radical plans are being drawn for a £20mcorr leisure centre on the outskirts of Oxford.

The Oxford Mail has been told the crumbling Oxford Ice Rink in Oxpens Road and Temple Cowley Pool will be knocked down and replaced with a multi-purpose complex close to the ring road.

It is set to become one of the best in the region.

City council leisure chiefs have been told the complex must have "pulling power" - and it could include features like slides, flumes and a wave machine.

The ice rink would be Olympic size, while there could also be room for a skatepark.

However, the complex would not include an Olympic-size swimming pool - just a facility of "competition standard".

The project, which has been described as a medium-term aspiration, would go some way to addressing leisure services in Oxford, some of which were branded "unacceptable" last year by auditors.

Leisure chiefs have identified two council-owned plots of land,we have not been told where they are plus Arlington Business Park in Cowley as potential sites - but no decision has been made on which is most suitable.

City council leader John Goddard, who put the cost of the project at £20m, said: "The idea is to put a slightly bigger ice rink of international competition size and swimming pool together not too far away from where Temple Cowley is now.

"The pool is now in a poor state, crumbling and not providing a very good service, so we want something that is better and modern.

What is clear is that we need to do something radical. We can't go on propping up leisure facilities as they are."

City councillors recently agreed a £350,000 repair package to keep the ice rink and Temple Cowley Pool open for the foreseeable future.

However, the council wants to demolish the facilities - particularly the ice rink, which is on prime West End regeneration land.

Frans van de Schootbrugge, chairman of City of Oxford Swimming Club, said: "We welcome the fact the city council has come to realise it needs to make an investment and knock down the two facilities.

"We now want an open dialogue because the needs of serious swimmers need to be taken into account."

No decision has been reached on how the scheme would be financed, but a sizeable sum would be obtained from selling the two council-owned sites while a better facility would lead to more customers.

Long-standing leisure critic and Tory city councillor Paul Sargent said: "Something has to be done.

"It makes absolute sense to build a swimming pool and ice rink together because you get the environmental benefits.

"But we need a competition standard pool - flumes and leisure pools come in and out of fashion."

Mr Goddard added: "I don't see why this should not happen."

Sounds good, but please make it accessible to those without transport, e.g. close to a bus route, like the ice rink and Temple Cowley are now.

It's true just like getting to the cinema and bowling alley at the Kassam stadium ,how do you get there without a car,why do buses not go there from the city centre?especially at night.

The council must ensure that this new facility is built and up-and-running before they close down the existing rink/pool.

Why not redevelop the current Ice-rink site into a new lesiure facility/park? It would be a great place to have a really nice park with lawns, BBQs, some tennis/basketball courts and a skate-park. The pool and ice-rink could either be incorporated or moved to Cowley, but it would be a shame if this site were built on and taken away from the public just to replace existing facilities.

Why should the new leisure facility be in Cowley? Why can't we have something in the North of Oxford for once? Cowley has the kassam stadium with the whole complex up there for entertainment and it is unfair that people with no transport have to find ways of getting to Cowley all of the time.
I know the complex that is at the Kassam stadium is not a council run thing but surely you could look at north oxford and see that all we have is cutteslowe park and the ferry centre - it would be great to have something like an ice rink etc here.

The Ice Rink is the only indoor sports facility in South Oxford - the amenities in Hinksey Park are strictly seasonal and unusable in bad weather. In addition the Rink on it's present site provides a valuable sport and leisure facility for young people in South Oxford and the City generally which they can get to easily by public transport or on foot. If the Ice Rink goes we will be left with next to nothing.

Look at the bigger picture, if the council let the ice rink fall aprt- they can then draw up plans to build on that site which is their intention from Botley through to Grandpoint to turn a huge 50 acre plot into a quarry.

Because all your nimby local councillors would never let planning get through.

There have been two attempts at getting a skate park in north oxford, scuppered by locals, who seem to want to turn the area into eastbourne and have nothing more exciting in their lives than the arrival of the new saga catalogue.

Why should it not be in Cowley...Ferry sports Centre has not long been refurbished to the tune of £3m and what has Cowley had??? I'll tell you nothing but patchworking and also if these new facilities are put at the most affluent part of town it will mean pricing out of the reach of the less well off and therefore making the facilities an elitest establsihment and we already have enough of those in Oxford and pray tell where would you house these new facilities...not sure there is much space left in North Oxford...don't be so greedy think of everyone who lives in the City not just yourselves, the area it should go to is the south of the city where there is not facilities but failinig that Cowley is good as like the article says its just off the ringroad and of course the Bus Services in Oxford will provide transport they are not dumb! They always put on buses that are needed afterall money is money at the end of the day.

Do you have any references for this?

I had trouble finding Arlington Business Park. Its not called that, its Oxford Business Park.Arlington were the developers. Oxford mail got their facts wrong again.

J - NC is refering to the gravel extraction plans for the Grandpont to Botley area. These have been cleverly disguised as plans for a rowing lake but it's about gravel and money pure and simple and the plan involves the destruction of a huge area of our flood plain. I'm sure people in houses in S & W Oxford who have recently flooded or narrowly avoided it will be thrilled to know these plans are being revived by developers. The Oxford Times has carried the story.

It's a good idea, but the council MUST build the new facilities before demolishing the current ice rink. Far too many ice rinks in this country have disappeared already.

I'm concerned that the Council will have to sell the existing ice rink before they will have enough money to build the new complex.

I think it should be on one of the fields by Stratfield Brake right next to the ready made Car park - Water Eaton Park and ride
with the potential to put a rail halt in nearby as well for the whole county
Its right next to the A34 and and a well served bus route to Kidlington
I seem to remember not so long ago Blackbird leys got a sports centre and their small pool upgraded along with the facilities at the Kassam Stadium - Temple cowley had a good deal spent on it a few years ago
Its very easy to be hard on North Oxford but there is a Council Estate here that apart from Cutteslowe Park and the Skate Park has Nothing
Even Barton is better served
I think the Idea that North Oxford is different comes from the big houses on the Banbury Road and Woodstock road, these are mostly student facilities nowadays or Language schools,
There are just as many Private houses in cowley as in any other part of the city
