OXFORDSHIRE residents are being urged to check their gas appliances are safe before the Christmas get together.

A survey found that less than five per cent of homes in the UK have a gas safety check at their property before the holiday season – but a gas company said Gas Safe registered engineers should be called in.

Paul Durose, joint chief executive of Gas Tag, said: “We all know how busy it gets at this time of year, but taking time out from our hectic schedule to ensure our appliances are safe could be a life-saver.

“Research tells us that fewer than five per cent of households put a gas safety check on their to-do list during the festive season, but it really should be the number one priority.”

The Gas Safety Trust said there were 20 accidental carbon monoxide poisonings across Britain up to 2016.

“Surely, in 2017, it should be totally unacceptable,” Mr Durose said.
