FIRE chiefs have issued a series of warnings to residents on how they can stay safe in their homes over the Christmas period.

Managers at Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service say dangers are increased at this time of year with an increase in cooking, decorations that may burn easily and the use of Christmas tree lights.

Station Manager, Chris Barber said: “As residents decorate their homes and make cooking preparations, we ask them to remember to place items responsibly, especially lights, candles and Christmas trees, which could catch fire, not overload sockets and take care with fireplaces and wood burners.

“Most fires happen in the kitchen and we urge people to be extra careful there.

“We are also stressing how important it is to keep an eye out for elderly neighbours who might be isolated and benefit from at a greater risk of fire.”

Fire officers say candles should never be left unattended, or placed near Christmas trees or materials that can catch light easily.

Christmas lights should always be switched off and unplugged overnight and electric sockets should not be overloaded.

Fire officers are also advising residents to check their Christmas tree lights carry the British Safety Standard sign.

Tinsel can also burn easily and should not be attached to heaters or lights or placed immediately above or around the fireplace.

Mr Barber also warned residents not to drink and drive. Visit 365alive.co.uk/cms/content/winter-safety
