A STUDENT died after suffering a cardiac arrest while in the back of a police van, an inquest has heard.

Oxfordshire coroner Darren Salter formally opened the inquest of Nuno Cardoso, 25, who died on Friday, November 24.

The inquest heard how Thames Valley Police had attended an address and arrested Mr Cardoso, of Ruskin Hall, Dunstan Rd, Oxford, in the early hours.

Coroner Darren Salter said: “Officers arrested him over allegations of a two person assault and he was placed in the rear of the police van.

“They were en-route to Abingdon custody when, whilst travelling, Mr Cardoso suffered a cardiac arrest.”

The inquest heard how the Thames Valley Police officers pulled over in a bid to help Mr Cardoso and called South Central Ambulance Service.

The incident saw police activity at Redbridge park-and-ride.

Mr Cardoso was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital before he died later that day.

Result of a post mortem are yet to be established and coroner Mr Salter said further test will be made, including toxicology, before the full inquest on September 5 next year.

The incident is being investigated by the Indepedent Police Complaints Commission.
