FIREFIGHTERS tackled a garage fire which they feared could have spread to a bungalow.

Crews attended to a fire at a property on Cane Lane in Grove at 8.24pm on Friday.

When they arrived, they found a fridge inside the garage on fire.

The garage was filled with smoke and the fire had spread into the roof rafters of the bungalow.

Fire crews from Wantage and Abingdon wore breathing apparatus and tackled the fire quickly, using high pressure hose reels to put it out.

They then cut away materials burnt in the blaze, working in difficult and cramped conditions.

Fire service experts will carry out further investigations to see how the fire started in coming days – but said the most likely cause of the fire is an electrical fault in the fridge.

Station manager Gary D’Anger said “The occupiers rapid response in calling the fire service coupled with the immediate actions of the fire crews prevented the roof from becoming fully engulfed in fire.

“We can all learn from the actions taken at this incident. In the event of fire get out, get the fire service out and stay out.”
