A 16th century pub in Burford has been crowned the best in the Cotswolds by its customers for the third year in a row.

The Angel, in Witney Street, won the Best Pub category of the The Cotswolds Awards 2017, which celebrate local people and businesses.

The pub, run by couple Terence King and Gemma Finch, fought off stiff competition for the accolade, which is voted for entirely by the public.

Mr King, 51, said: “We will have spent six years at The Angel in December this year, and it is so wonderful to win this award, and know that our customers still love what we do.”

Loved both by locals looking for a bit of escapism and visitors exploring the area, the pub promises a warm welcome to all, including families, dogs and children.

Ms Finch, 36, said the pair did not feel the pressure to keep their winning streak going as it was "part of the ethos" of what they do.

She added: "I think people value the personal service we provide as a family-run business and our staff are all long-term and just as dedicated as we are so we know even if we aren't there customers are still being treated they way we want them to be."

James Clarke, managing director of Hook Norton Brewery, which owns the pub, said: “We are extremely proud of Terence, Gemma and the whole team at The Angel and what they have achieved.

"The Cotswolds is an extremely competitive area to operate in and to win this award three years in a row is a fantastic accolade, made even more so by the fact that the award is generated through genuine customer nominations."

Those tempted to find out what customers love so much can visit the pub's website for more information, including food and accommodation, with Christmas menus already available and a New Years' Eve menu due shortly.
