TRAFFIC was backed up for miles on the M40 with drivers reporting delays of up to two hours heading northbound last night.
Queues were at a standstill after a crash which happened close to J7 for Thame near the exit slip road.
The carriageway was completely closed off at Milton Common while a vehicle was moved from the central reservation to the hard shoulder.
The traffic was being diverted via the A329 following the hollow square symbol towards the A40 London Road, and on to J8A for Oxford Services.
Vehicles that were trapped ahead of the diversion were being turned back on themselves and some driver said they were stuck on the motorway for up to two hours.
#Oxfordshire On the #M40 n/bound, J7 - J8, we've released the traffic that was 'trapped' inside the road closure. Thanks for your patience.

The carriageway reopened about 9pm after initially being closed about 5pm.
