OXFORD City’s goalscoring hero Matt Paterson did not want all the praise lavished on him after Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup heroics – instead directing the credit to his teammates.

The striker headed in Dave Pearce’s cross on 46 minutes to earn the Vanarama National League South side a shock 1-0 win at Colchester United.

City worked tirelessly throughout to keep their Sky Bet League Two hosts at bay, with one moment of quality from the part-timers proving the difference.

The former Southend United striker was delighted to see his header find the bottom corner and help the side advance from the first round for only the second time in their history.

He said: “Pearcy did well to stab out a cross.

“I was just lucky enough to read it, head it back the way it was coming and luckily it just crept in for me.

“It’s nice, especially for a team like ours.”

He added: “A lot of the younger players have not had the experience of playing in the FA Cup and it’s a great feeling for them and I’m just happy to be part of it.

“I was a little isolated out there, but all the boys put in a shift and they deserve a lot of credit, it was a real team effort.

“The magic of the FA Cup lives on doesn’t it.”

The 28-year-old became a social media sensation in the summer when a photo was posted online of him signing for City in McDonald’s.

Boss Mark Jones joked he may have to buy the striker a Big Mac and strawberry milkshake at the services opposite the ground after his goal.

Paterson replied: “I’ll hold him to that, I didn’t get one on the day!”
