AN OXFORDSHIRE-based project which is seeking to build a car that will reach speeds of 1,000mph undertook its first public runs yesterday.

The Bloodhound Super Sonic Car, which has been based at Didcot's Great Western Park since summer 2015, drove at 210mph down Newquay Airport's runway.

At the end of the project the car will be fitted with a rocket motor so it will travel at 1,000mph but that is about three years away yet.

The car was driven by Royal Air Force Wing Commander Andy Green and made two trips down the airport's 1.7-mile runway.

The Bloodhound will be moved abroad to travel faster next year.

In 2018 project managers hope it will be taken to the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa for a 12-mile long course.

That would be perfect for the car to get up to high speeds and then slow down slowly.

It is hoped that technology to make the car get up to 800mph will be complete by 2019 and then 1,000mph by 2020 – but that is dependent on rocket technology.
