PEP Clotet has praised the contribution of Wes Thomas during Oxford United’s return to winning ways, writes JACK JOHNSON.

The striker netted his fifth goal of the campaign as the U’s beat AFC Wimbledon in Sky Bet League One on Saturday.

Thomas, who missed the majority of last season with an Achilles injury, has now already bettered his haul from 2016/17.

And the 30-year-old, who also netted in the victory over Peterborough United a fortnight ago, which ended a three-match winless run, has proved a handful since returning to full fitness after a knee problem.

Clotet has been delighted with the striker’s displays.

The U’s boss said: “It shows when he is focused 100 per cent, he is a fantastic player for us.

“He is scoring and helping his teammates a lot and that is what we want.”

Clotet added: “(On Saturday) it (his goal) was a fantastic move in behind on a counter-attack.

“I’m delighted because that is the quality he has.”
