A CENTRAL Oxford junction is a 'disaster waiting to happen', cycling campaigners have warned.

Deborah Glass Woodin says she was nearly 'wiped out' by a car driver turning in to Speedwell Street as she cycled up St Aldate's last week.

The former councillor says that she has seen numerous other 'near misses' between cyclists and other vehicles as work continues near Folly Bridge.

Ms Woodin, 55, believes the driver thought he had right of way because of the temporary traffic light system in place for the roadworks which she has described as 'confusing for everyone'.

She said: "I was going straight ahead and the driver turned in to my path.

"He swore at me thinking I had run the light but I had done nothing wrong.

"He saw a green light that is meant only for the crossing and assumed he was good to go in any direction but drivers should still be giving way to oncoming traffic."

The traffic lights in Speedwell Street have also been turned off and give way lines are now in place yet the traffic lights themselves remain and are not covered up, leading to some bus drivers coming out on to St Aldate's without stopping.

Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson Martin Crabtree said the lights on Speedwell Street were turned off at 7am Thursday morning and 'all the road markings in place now must be obeyed'.

But mum of two Ms Woodin, who lives near Folly Bridge said: "Nobody seems to know what is going on.

"We have right of way going straight ahead but nobody seems to realise that.

"My children use that route every day to get to school and in to the city centre.

"I don't want to wait for someone does get knocked off for action to be taken.

"We keep being told we live in a cycling city but that's often despite of the council, not because of it."
