A BURST of pink will engulf Witney this weekend as the town celebrates a popular fundraiser for breast cancer.

The colour will be used to decorate shopfronts and outfits on Saturday as Witney in the Pink marks its seventeenth year.

Event organiser Jeanne Chattoe, who lost her sister to cancer, said the generosity and support from people in Witney brought a tear to her eyes.

Witney in the Pink has raised thousands for Abingdon-based Against Breast Cancer since its first outing, often raising nearly £10,000 each year.

Ms Chattoe, who said her vintage clothing store Renaissance, in Wesley Walk, was filled with pink balloons on Friday, said: “It’s lovely because we’ve made a mark and we’ve hit people’s hearts. I think what we’ve achieved is really great.

“People in Witney are so generous. It’s amazing. It brings tears to my eyes.”

She recalled hearing story about a woman who, upon seeing the pink balloons at a previous event, was prompted to go make an appointment with a doctor, at which she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The tale, said Ms Chattoe, emphasised the significance of raising awareness as well as cash.

As with previous years, a wide array of entertainment will be on offer in the centre of town throughout the event, which runs from 9am to 5.30pm and will be launched by Witney mayor Chris Woodward.

Mr Woodward will also judge the best window display and the best best member of staff.

Entertainment this year will include Witney Town Band, Abingdon Choir, Clubbercise and Body Evo, and a tombola and cake sale will help boost funds on the day.

Those who want to help out can do so by providing cakes for the cake sale on Saturday.
