72-year-old motorcyclist who died in A420 crash at the Botley Interchange was hit by another bike

The rider, a 72-year-old man, was involved in a collision with a stationary van in lane one of the A420 near the Botley interchange on Friday, police said.

He fell from his bike and was struck by another motorbike travelling in the inside lane of the eastbound carriageway.

Officers said the man, who was from Warwickshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, the force said his next of kin have been informed, as have HM Coroner for Oxfordshire.

Senior investigating officer, Sgt Jack Hawkins of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, at Abingdon, said: "Our thoughts remain with the man's family at this very difficult time.

"We are appealing for anyone who witnessed this road traffic collision to come forward and call 101 quoting reference 970 22/9/17."

The air ambulance, two road ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and another rapid response car attended after the incident which happened just before 4.30pm on Friday.

The van driver was not injured in the collision and the second motorcyclist was taken to the John Radcliffe and has since been discharged.

No one has been arrested.

The eastbound carriageway of the A420 was closed at Botley until about 8pm yesterday.

The crash also caused significant traffic delays on the A34 northbound at Botley and other surrounding roads at rush hour.
