A PRIMARY school in Kidlington could be set for a £365k expansion to meet increasing demand.

Oxfordshire County Council wants to accommodate more children at Edward Feild Primary School, and has launched consultation to gain residents’ opinions.

Its plans would see the school’s annual intake rise from 45 to 60, which would eventually see 420 pupils taught there as opposed to the current 297.

Comments on the proposal opened last week, and will close on October 11.

In consultation papers on its website, the council said: “Schools across Kidlington have experienced rising demand for places in recent years.

“There has been a pressure on availability of places across the partnership for the younger children.

“Expansion of school capacity is needed to meet the demands of the existing population, and to allow for population fluctuations and movement into the area by new families, including into any new homes built within the village.”

It noted the school was rated ‘good’ by the education regulator Ofsted earlier this year, adding: “Expansion will ensure sufficiency of good quality education to children living within the village as its population grows, and that there is an effective operation of parental choice.”

Documents state the total estimated cost of the expansion would be £365,000, funded by the government’s pot for additional school places.

Future developers in the area may also be required to contribute. To comment visit consultations.oxfordshire.gov.uk.
