A FIRE has caused significant damage to a lounge in a bungalow in Blackbird Leys.

Fire crews from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at a mid-terraced bungalow in Pegasus Road at 11:43am yesterday.

Two fire engines arrived on the scene within minutes, and were faced with black smoke issuing from the window of the lounge.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and extinguished the fire using high pressure hose reel jets and used a large fan to clear the remaining smoke.

They then checked the adjoining properties using a thermal image camera to ensure the fire hadn’t spread further.

The resident had left the house after hearing a smoke alarm and was given a full health check including for smoke inhalation by South Central Ambulance Service.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Incident Commander, Crew Manager Dan Shepard of Slade Fire Station said: “Fortunately, on this occasion the occupier had working smoke alarms in the property, which alerted all persons concerned to the fire and allowed plenty of time for them to make their escape safely.

"We recommend everyone has at least one working smoke alarm on each floor of their property, tests them weekly, and has a plan of how to escape in case of fire”
