OXFORDSHIRE residents continue to defy the dangers of Hurricane Irma.

Oxford Brookes University media manager Úna McBreen has been holidaying in Cuba for the past week and was in the capital Havana when Irma hit on Saturday.

She tweeted the pictures above of the flooded streets, but said the city otherwise seemed OK.

Littlemore husband and wife Duncan and Sophie Gibbons, who were honeymooning on the Dominican republic when the storm hit, went out the very next day to help clear up.

Oxford Mail:

Mr Gibbons said the town of Punta Cana was badly hit.

He said: “Out in the villages, small houses were damaged by debris and there was flooding from the rain. It was an absolute miracle no one was seriously injured.

“We are now just really concerned for everyone in Florida and hoping for this to be over.”

Oxford Mail:

Abingdon super-slimmer Nigel Johnson is determined to get to Florida this week after shedding 10 stone.

The 32-year-old is on a mission to return to Universal Studios in Orlando, where he was told he was ‘too fat' to ride The Incredible Hulk ride.

Despite Irma descending on Florida, Mr Johnson said he was planning to fly to New York or LA this week and wait out the storm before jetting over the Florida.

He said: "The parks are set to open in the next few days, depending on the damage.

"I’m not scared about Irma because it’s been downgraded to a category one storm, so there’s not as big an impact."
