A NEW 20mph speed limit in Windmill Road in Headington could be approved today despite police saying it is 'too low' and officers won't be able to enforce it.

Residents, cycling groups and Windmill Primary School have supported the proposals as on-street parking will be removed as part of the Access to Headington improvements.

Oxfordshire County Council could sign off the new speed limit - dropping from 30mph - but Thames Valley Police said: "Experience shows that changing to a lower speed limit on its own will not necessarily be successful in reducing the speed of traffic by very much.

"If a speed limit is set too low and is ignored then this could result in the majority of drivers criminalising themselves and could bring the system of speed limits into disrepute."

It added: "There should be no expectation that the police would be able to provide regular enforcement if a speed limit is set too low as this could result in an unreasonable additional demand on police resources."

City councillors Roz Smith, Mohammed Altaf-Khan and Ruth Wilkinson supported it but said residents wanted to 'more robust speed limit enforcement'

The county council's director of infrastructure delivery, Owen Jenkins, accepted police resources were 'already under severe pressure' but recommended their approval.

A decision will be made at county hall at 10am.
