OXFORD people should not be charged to use the recycling centres (Oxford Mail, August 31), with average council tax demands well over £1,000 and with W&S Recycling already being paid from council taxes to receive and possibly profit from the metals freely given by householders. October’s planned introduction of charges means that Oxford’s council tax payers will be charged twice for using the recycling service.

For the Conservative leader of the county council to say “I do not think this increase will lead to more flytipping” simply demonstrates just how out of touch Mr Hudspeth really is as flytipping has already dramatically increased in Oxfordshire, as farmers are reporting.

Labour county councillor John Sanders is correct in demanding that “the increases should be scrapped because they will lead to more flytipping... and the cost of clearing the extra flytipping waste will fall on the district councils”.

Oxfordshire County Council’s recycling policy should be leading the way by stipulating to W&S Recycling that they must allow householder to purchase donated recycled items for a small fee, rather than introducing recycling charges.

This would be a far more enlightened policy.
