WORK continues to plough ahead on £500,000 sewer replacement works in St Clement’s with one lane closed.

The Thames Water improvement works continue into their sixth week this weekend after the company first dug up the road on July 10.

The works have closed one lane and there are temporary traffic lights between Juene Street and Dawson Street.

The inbound lane heading towards Oxford city centre has been closed, but outbound lane is not affected.

Since the work began drivers and residents have complained of added congestion in surrounding streets with people being diverted away from the area along thoroughfares including Rectory Road.

Oxford city councillor Tom Hayes has also previously spoken out about the works and how they are affecting nearby residents, with pollution and noise complaints.

But works will remain on site over the next few weeks, with an expected end date of September 3 earmarked by Thames Water.

The utility company said that the works in St Clement’s are essential and vital to ensure the work helps modernise the sewer system beneath the city’s streets.

It also said that the traffic management had been refined to consider the impacts on people living nearby and the system is designed to enable the most efficient flow of traffic on the wider highway network.
