OXFORD City’s Zoe Pollock produced a stunning run in the final event to snatch a silver medal in the UK Championships under 17 heptathlon at Manchester.

Pollock had her running events to thank for her medal.

After opening with an 80m hurdles of 11.66 to lead the competition, she produced below-par performances in the high jump and shot to drop to eighth.

Pollock moved back up to fourth with a time of 25.18secs in the 200m, more than over one and a half seconds quicker than anyone else in the competition.

Her up-and-down weekend continued on day two with points dropped in the long jump and javelin, placing her in sixth before the last event – the 800m.

A well-paced run of 2.18.26 – a personal best by more than four seconds – gave her a super second spot with 4,615 points.

Coach Marcia Marriott said: “Zoe is clearly in really good shape and running well.

“We just need to work on the technique in her under-par events before the English Schools final in September.

“If we can improve her jumps and throws she should be challenging for gold.”

Pollock’s results: 80mH 11.66secs; high jump 1.46m; shot 10.05m; 200m 25.18secs; long jump 5.12m; javelin 23.27; 800m 2.18.26 (pb).
