XEMI’s assured performance on his Oxford United debut came as no surprise to goalkeeper Scott Shearer.

The 22-year-old put in a tidy display after coming on at half-time during the U’s 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Birmingham City last Saturday.

Xemi, who helped Barcelona B win promotion last season before being released by the Catalan giants’ second string, is set for more game-time against Leeds United today.

And even before he got his first taste of English football last week, the midfielder immediately impressed his teammates during training.

“He needs to be a bit more comfortable on the ball for me,” joked Shearer.

“Listen, he looks top-class.

“It will just be about getting used to the pace of the English game, as most foreigners need to.

“But in terms of ability, you can see he has tons of it.”

Xemi signed for Oxford 11 days ago and is among six new recruits to join United since Pep Clotet was appointed manager earlier this month.

Shearer added: “Any new additions that are coming in are gelling quite quickly.

“We know they will add new dimensions to the team.”
