A FUNDRAISING spectacle will see rowers take to the River Thames in fancy dress.

Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper will return to the town on Sunday, September 3 and is now accepting entries.

The event, which is in its 19th year, challenges amateur teams to race dragon boats near Abingdon Bridge.

Co-organiser and long-serving club member Richard Benton said: “This is a great way to spend a Sunday in September.

“All teams have the opportunities to have fun, bond with each other, and get competitive. It’s good for friends, communities and businesses.

“Many teams take part dressed in fancy dress – often with a theme that reflects their cause or profession.”

So far 12 teams have signed up but the club hopes more will come forward, alongside stallholders and sponsors.

Mr Benton added: “The more teams that there are, the more fun is had, and even more money is raised for good causes.”

Cash raised through sponsorship will be given to charities supported by the club.

Anyone aged 12 years old or older can take part, and no experience is needed. Teams consist of about 20 people, including a drummer.
