A GOLFER visited hundreds of school pupils in hope of inspiring a new generation of players.

Frilford Heath Golf Club coach Derek Craik led classes at five Oxfordshire schools, as part of an initiative launched by the club last year.

In the past two months he has given taster sessions including at Appleton Primary School and Faringdon Secondary School, inviting children to sign up for a subsidised five-week course of lessons.

Gemma Leggett, who teaches at Appleton, said: “It is important to encourage children to enjoy being active.

“This initiative is the perfect way to bring a professional standard into their surroundings. We had a great day and we’re confident many pupils will pursue a new passion for golf.”

More than 400 pupils took part in Mr Craik’s school tour, which promotes the Frilford Heath Junior Academy.

The academy was set up last year thanks to the support of professional golfer Eddie Pepperell, who donated £10,000 of sponsorship money to the club to support a junior programme.

Alistair Booth, chair of the golf club, said: “Eddie’s generosity has resulted in more youngsters getting involved in the sport – exactly what he and the club set out to do.

“He has such a profound impact on youngsters with this academy - he is a perfect role model.”
