THE last of three enormous steel screws which will power a £3.2m hydroelectric power plant in the Thames just outside Oxford was lowered into the river this morning.
The Archimedes screws, each weighing 22 tonnes, have all been lowered into the river at Sandford on Thames and are now being floated into position at Sandford Weir.
The power plant, being built by Oxford’s Low Carbon Hub group, will generate enough electricity – 440kWp – to power an average of 450 homes.
The plant is owned by hundreds of residents who bought shares.
