LIGHTSABRES at the ready – your day may be invaded by an intergalactic army of geeks.

Sci-fi scions across the county – and indeed the galaxy – will be celebrating ‘Star Wars Day’ today by greeting each other with the timeless refrain, 'May the fourth be with you'.

Among the fantasy fans getting in on the fun is Wantage sci-fi shop owner Steve Taylor.

As well as raising a glass of Jet Juice to his favourite fantasy franchise today, he will welcome Star Wars: Return of the Jedi actor Michael Henbury (Taboo the Ewok) and a Storm Trooper to the store this Saturday.

Mr Taylor, 46, who runs Toy Planet Collectors, said: “The whole shop will be dressed up for Star Wars and anyone who comes in costume will get ten per cent off.

“I’ve been a collector of Star Wars memorabilia since I was six and my parents took me to see the first film - it has a great story and the film was way before its time in terms of filming, storyline and everything.

“Even today it still holds up, it’s still being watched.”

Mr Taylor, who also organised the first Wantage Comic Con last year, said the sci-fi movie industry had been reinvigorated by the spate of recent Marvel and DC superhero films but also his generation passing on the fanaticism to their children.

The organisers of Oxford Comic Con, which took over Oxford University’s Examination School for a second year last month, said they would also be celebrating Star Wars Day.

The added: “We are still recovering from the convention, but we will undoubtedly watch the original trilogy overnight and, as the weather is looking now, take our lightsaber umbrellas out during the day.”

Michael Henbury will be meeting fans and signing autographs at Toy Planet Collectors on Saturday, 11am - 4pm.
