Vintage buses dating back as far as the 1950’s are set to return to Oxford roads this Easter Bank Holiday Monday.

As part of its Easter festivities, the Oxford Bus Museum is for one-day only is offering free rides along Oxfordshire's old rural bus routes.

Five of the Museums restored vintage buses, as well as two visiting vehicles, will be involved across the day as they depart from the West Oxfordshire museum from 10.20am.

Museum Director, Jonathan Radley, promises enthusiasts they will experience a bygone era of public transport in Oxford.

He said: “This Easter Monday we're offering families and transport enthusiasts the opportunity to hop on-board a vintage bus and enjoy a nostalgic journey.

"The buses in service from the 1950s and '60s will have conductors on-board issuing traditional paper tickets - something that many youngsters have never experienced."

On offer throughout the day will be three potential destinations following the traditional routes to Oxford Parkway, Woodstock and Witney Market Place replicating journeys of old.

Vehicles involved in the throwback event include one bus dating back to 1957 with the engine at the front and the famous open platform at the rear as well as one of the first buses to be operated by just one person that actually operated in Oxford City Centre.

The Museum, in Long Hanborough, is a registered charity and has a collection of 35 vintage buses alongside other vehicles on show hoping to tell the story of Oxfordshire transport spanning over 130 years.
