YOUNG people can now buy single bus fares to any location in Oxford for just £1.

Using the new ‘get around’ card introduced by Oxford Bus Company, the company said they could travel anywhere within the Cityzone area at the cut price.

The card, which includes a photo of the holder, costs £5 to buy.

It was welcomed by Oxford City Council leader Bob Price, who said it would help families who were struggling with the cost of living.

He added: “It will be a real help to young people to access the leisure and sporting facilities that the council provides and will help the many less well off families in the city who are struggling with low wages and rising living costs.”

Oxford Bus Company managing director Phil Southall said: “With recent legislation requiring young people to stay in education until the age of 18, we’ve had a lot of requests for more tailored travel options for youngsters in education and training.

“This card comes in addition to our existing range of tickets for under 19s, and we hope this helps Oxford’s young people ‘get around’ more easily while they’re still studying.”

The company said yesterday that the card was in addition to a separate deal it had also started on its X90 service to London, which allows children to travel free on every day of the week.

Its ‘get around’ cards can be purchased online or at travel shops in Gloucester Green and High Street. Proof of age is required.

*A passport style photo, not a photocopy, is required when applying for the card in store, Oxford Bus Company said. Applications will be sent to the company's head office and then the card mailed to the customer's address.
