A crackdown on motorists in Headington resulted in two arrests and more than 60 fines handed out in just 10 hours.

Police carried out a blitz along London Road and the junction of St Leonard's Road and Stile Road, following complaints about motorists driving the wrong way along a one-way street.

Twelve motorists were caught driving down Stile Road in the wrong direction, police handed out 69 tickets for a variety of motoring offences and two arrests were made for cannabis possession during the operation, which finished on Tuesday.

Pc Chris Miles, neighbourhood officer for Headington, said: "We have had a lot of residents coming out to thank us for what we're doing.

"This operation was designed to be pro-active before there is a serious accident - some motorists said they didn't see the signs.

"The whole purpose of this operation was to improve road safety in Headington."

Motorists using mobile phones, not wearing seat belts and driving without an valid MOT were also targeted by police.

The Oxford Mail reported on the problems in Stile Road last month.

Mail reporters spotted seven motorists in an hour ignoring one-way signs.

Stile Road resident Linda Ramsbottom said: "It's nice to see the police taking some action, I was aware it had become a problem but didn't realise it was this bad."

Justine Williams, of Holyoake Roadok, said: "London Road is one of the main routes into the city.

"I'm so glad the police have taken this action.

"I was almost in a head-on collision the other day going up Stile Road, these drivers just don't care."

Police are hoping the operation will act as a deterrent to motorists.

Pc Miles added: "We know we will never stop people doing these things completely, but you can make it so people are less inclined to chance it.

"We'll continue to monitor the situation and if it becomes a problem again then we will act on it.

"If people tell us about these problems then we are quite happy to deal with it."
