A LEISURE centre will celebrate its 15th birthday with a charity open day.

Sports fans in Abingdon can test out tennis, squash, swimming and a selection of fitness classes at White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre as it marks the milestone.

Activities cost £2 to take part in, with all proceeds going to Oxford children’s hospice Helen & Douglas House.

The event runs on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, organised by leisure centre owners Vale of White Horse District Council.

The council’s cabinet member for leisure, Charlotte Dickson, said: “After 15 years it is bigger and better than ever and it will be great to see many people join us for the open days to help celebrate this occasion.”

She said the centre in Audlett Drive, which recently underwent a £1.7m gym extension, attracts 800,000 visitors a year.

It is run by leisure centre operator Better, whose community sports manager Megan Horwood said: “The centre has so much to offer and it’s great it’s hosting an event on this scale for its local community.

“We welcome all to come along and give something new a try. This event gives the community a chance to view the new development and learn more about this great facility on their doorstep.”

The birthday event runs from 8am until 5pm on Saturday, and 9.30am until 9pm on Sunday.

Other activities available to try out include a racquet sport called pickleball, and inflatable sessions in the pool.

Sessions are drop in but spaces are limited, so the council encouraged people to book by calling 01235 540700.
