YOUNG adventurers are set to enjoy a new play paradise thanks to an £18,000 revamp of an outdoor area.

Work has begun to transform the play equipment in Manzil Way after Oxford City Council invested £18,000 in the area.

The revamp, which began on February 20, will see 'outdated' climbing frames replaced with large multi-functional gear.

Linda Smith, executive board member for leisure, parks and sport, said: "I am really pleased with the design of the new climbing frame, which will enhance play opportunities and make the park more appealing to children.

"We are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Oxford residents, and making it as easy as possible for people of all ages to keep fit."

The new climbing frame within the East Oxford play area will boast balance challenges, slide bars, a rope bridge, hoop and rope climbs.

Youngsters will also have the chance to enjoy frolicking down the new slide and fireman’s pole.

The revamp, which is due to finish later this month, will see new safety surfacing installed in the play area, off Cowley Road.

Children will still be able to enjoy other areas of the play area while the work is under way, the city council confirmed.

The improvements are part of a 10-year project, ending in 2023, which will see the city council invest £1m into play areas across the city, focussing on its corporate objective to improve Oxford's sports and leisure opportunities.

Past work includes the £9m Leys Pools and Leisure Centre, the £4m Rose Hill Community Centre, the £500,000 contribution towards the Oxford Spires Sports and Fitness centre, and £316,000-worth of fitness trails across Oxford's parks.
