Family and team mates of hockey goalkeeper Tim Bence joined together to celebrate his life.

The Oxford Hockey Club 7s player collapsed and died on the pitch on February 11 at the age of 43.

On Saturday each of the club's 14 sides who had matches paid tribute to Mr Bence before they played.

His parents Mike and Sylvia, from Swinbrook in West Oxfordshire, went to watch his 7s team take on Slough Swifts 2s at Oxford Brookes Sports Centre in Headington.

Along with the players and other spectators they held a 30 seconds silence, followed by three cheers and then 30 seconds applause.

Mrs Bence said: "They said if you did not want to just stand silently during the silence you could hug someone, because Tim was known for hugging people.

"It was a really nice day.

"Everybody was so supportive and his team won 2-0, it was really, really nice."

Former Wood Green School pupil Mr Bence worked as a self-employed gardener.

He collapsed as his side played British Airways 2s in Harlington, London and despite swift medical attention he could not be saved.

Mrs Bence said: "All his team mates came over and introduced themselves.

"We had heard their names but we had never met them before.

"We were overwhelmed with all the support they gave us."
