A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault in the entrance to Oxford's Covered Market.

Thames Valley Police officers guarded a cordon at the entrance to the market in High Street yesterday, after receiving reports of the attack at about 4am yesterday.

Detectives said their investigation was in the ‘early stages’.

They have bailed the man until March 29.

One man from a nearby shop said: “They were here from about half past six in the morning.

“There were forensics guys in white coats taking pictures and setting out number markers on the ground.”

The cordon was in place at the entrance to the market between Pizza Hut and David Clulow Opticians in High Street.
