HEADINGTON'S famous shark may have some competition after a renowned sculptor applied the finishing touches to a Narnia-inspired lion artwork at Bury Knowle Park.

The Friends of Bury Knowle Park recently won funding from the 5p carrier bag levy at Tesco stores, and secured an impressive £12,000 to revamp the park.

They used the money to secure Oxford artist and wood sculptor Matt Cave to construct a depiction of the famed lion Aslan from the CS Lewis series along with a number of other characters.

With the lion complete Headington councillor Roz Smith said the famous shark embedded in the roof of a home in New High Street could soon have its thunder stolen as the symbol of Headington.

She said: "It is a fantastic addition to the park and its great we have kept with the theme of Narnia.

"I think its quite interesting, somebody said maybe it's time to change the symbol for Headington.

"It's time to have Aslan rather than the shark for our area.

"Everybody is delighted to see it, it just looks so majestic there."

Mr Beaver and Mr Tumnus will next join the line-up, wood sculptor of 15 years Matt Cave said last week.

The pair will be immortalised in a carving on a bench to be installed at the park.

CS Lewis, the author of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, lived at The Kilns in Headington until his death in 1963.
