A FAMILY had a lucky escape after a tumble dryer burst into flames at a home in Rose Hill.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in the conservatory of a house in Lambourn Road, Oxford, shortly after midday yesterday.

Arriving within minutes of being called, officers faced flames coming out from the ground floor and smoke billowing from the first floor of the property.

Firefighters made their way through the smoke-filled house and found the source of the fire in the conservatory attached to the kitchen, which involved a tumble dryer.

After checking no one was in the property, they extinguished the fire using water jets and removed the smoke from all parts of the premises.

Incident Commander, Crew Manager Kevin Morgan from Slade Park fire station praised the parent of the home for getting themselves and their two young children out of the house.

He added: "Due to the prompt and effective action by fire crews the fire was able to be contained to the conservatory area and a small part of the kitchen."

Crews from Slade Park, Rewley Road and Kidlington Fire Stations dealt with the incident.

Fire Investigators are working to establish the cause of the fire which is not being treated as suspicious.

Oxfordshire County Council Emergency Planning Team are assisting with the temporary rehousing of the family.

The fire service said it would like to remind the public of the potential dangers of going out and leaving any electrical appliance, such as tumble driers, washing machines and ovens turned on.

They added residents should ensure they have working smoke alarms on each level of their homes.
