An Oxfordshire MP has welcomed a £1.3m cash boost to tackle the county’s potholes which are ‘frustrating drivers’.

The cash injection for the county was revealed by the Government last week to deal with dangerous cracks and crevices in the roads.

Henley MP John Howell, whose constituency covers most of South Oxfordshire, including Wheatley, Berinsfield and Benson, said potholes in the area were frustrating drivers and businesses.

He said: “The state of our roads is consistently raised with me by local residents across the constituency and remains a great source of frustration for drivers.

"This funding is welcome news for families and businesses in Oxfordshire who rely on our roads to get around."

He added: “It shows that we are delivering on our commitment to invest in infrastructure to attract businesses and secure a better future for local firms.”

The Department for Transport revealed Oxfordshire County Council would receive £19.4m in 2017-18 for road maintenance - £1.3m of which would be specifically for potholes.

It is £300,000 more than the council were given from the Pothole Action Fund last year.

Oxfordshire could also be set for more roads cash after the government set aside a £175m national road safety pot for ‘roads of most concern’.

The department’s document placed the A361 from Banbury to Chipping Norton in the top 10 of roads in the country in terms of the highest risk of fatal and serious and collisions.
