THE decision to move hundreds of gymnasts out of their new club home in a council U-turn could go back to councillors for a third time.

Cherwell Gymnastics Club initially won permission in October to move to a location in Ashville Way in Blackbird Leys.

But the decision was challenged soon after by neighbouring business Mayfield Press - who were hoping to expand into the area – who said the application had not been advertised correctly.

The council brought it back to the same East Area Planning Committee resolving that the Local Plan designates the area as commercial space and allowing the gymnastics club to stay would result in a loss of a possible 80 jobs.

On Wednesday the committee changed their minds and refused planning permission but now councillors Mary Clarkson and John Tanner have called-in the decision which is expected to be heard by a different set of councillors next month.

Mary Clarkson said: “The application came back to committee to satisfy the reasons for a Judicial Review, namely that it wasn’t advertised as a departure from the local plan.

“The same set of councillors made the initial decision allowing the gymnastic club to move in under the same circumstances, so I felt there were no grounds for it to be overturned.”

The space is currently being used by Cherwell Gymnastics Club who moved in last month following the initial go ahead.

Club chairwoman said £20,000 had been spent on relocating the club to Blackbird leys and fear the time it could take to find new premises again after previously searching for five years.

But Printing firm Mayfield Press argue it would have to move out of Oxford if it couldn’t expand into the neighbouring space.

It currently employs 50 people with another 35 expected to join after it was hoping to expand.
