A TURNING the Pages ceremony to commemorate fallen soldiers from the two world wars will be held tomorrow.

Ceremonies are held several times of year at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford and the names of soldiers from the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and The Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars are read out.

More than 200 people gathered at the cathedral for the Armistice Day ceremony in November, which was attended by members of the Armed Forces, the Royal British Legion and the Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force.

The ceremony on Saturday will take place at 11am, and 10 names of The Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars will be read out, together with 10 names from the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

Terry Roper, chairman of the Oxford branch of the Royal Green Jackets Association, is one of the veterans who reads out names at the ceremonies, held in the cathedral’s military chapel.

He said: “This is a long-standing tradition and it is very fitting that we remember fallen soldiers from these two regiments.

“The last ceremony on Armistice Day was very well attended.

“There were more than 200 people there, with young and old taking part.

“Sometimes relatives of the soldiers whose names are read out come to the cathedral and these occasions can be very moving.

“This year we will remember those who died in the third battle of Ypres in 1917.”
