HUNDREDS of pounds worth of warm weather gear has been gathered for the homeless by staff at camping store Go Outdoors.

At the start of December warehouse assistant Ann Booker set up a collection point at the front of the store in Old Abingdon Road and donations flooded in for Oxford Homeless Project.

Ms Booker, who has worked at the shop for 10 years, said: “Donations have come from members of the public and from staff.

“We have collected about seven big boxes full of coats, scarves, fleeces, tracksuits, socks and trousers.

“Some of the clothes are designed to be worn on a freezing mountainside so they should help to keep the homeless warm if they do find themselves sleeping on the street.

“Customers have been brilliant and staff at the store also made their own donations - we collected more than 200 items of clothing.”

Oxford Homeless Project is based at the Asian Cultural Centre in Manzil Way, East Oxford, where volunteers make a meal for the homeless, every other Monday, from 12 noon to 2pm.

Founder Shabnam Sabir said: “This is the second year staff at Go Outdoors have supported us in this way and we are very grateful for their support.

“It’s very good quality winter gear so it’s ideal for people who might be forced to sleep on the streets.”

The charity has not yet collected all the boxes from the store.
