NOT-SO Pukka Pies have led hygiene bosses to batter a city fish and chip shop.

Rose Hill Fish and Chips were handed a one-star rating from council environmental health inspectors with their method of cooking pies and storing raw food being criticised.

While no pests were found in the takeaway, inspectors warned staff to remove redundant materials that could harbour them.

The management team was given an extensive list of improvements to make by the beginning of next month ahead of a potential revisit.

The report read: "The Pukka Pies were being reheated in the hot holding cabinet, they should be thoroughly cooked to above 75C before being stored in the cabinet.

"The cabinet must not be used to cook or reheat food as bacteria will be able to multiply.

"Pukka Pies must be defrosted in the fridge not in the room or the cabinets."

Officers also said one of the hot cabinets was not hot enough and ordered staff to check it could reach 63C and throw it out if not.

The restaurant scored 'poor' when it came to food hygiene and safety with a number of issued surrounding the storage of food.

It read: "Raw chicken and salad were prepared on the same surface - ensure raw meat is prepared separately and thorough cleaning and sanitising is done to minimise the risk of cross contamination.

"Raw burgers were defrosting on the top shelf of the fridge - always store raw meat and chicken at the bottom of the fridge to avoid cross contamination."

There were also a number of 'cleaning' issues throughout the premises with items such as chopping boards needed to be replaced.

A lack of drain covers was also a problem which inspectors said could invite pests into the takeaway.

It said: "Provide drain covers to the 'chipping' room drain and the drain by the rear door to prevent pest access.

"Clean the area around the drains and repaint the 'chipping' room walls and ceiling - it is chipped and mouldy.

"Low level cleaning is needed and cleaning is also required to the wash hand basin, hand contact surfaces, and fridge and freezer seals."

Inspectors advised a food hygiene management system was put in place, a record which should be completed daily and always kept on the premises and ordered all staff handling food to have at least a Level 2 qualification in food hygiene.

Rose Hill Fish and Chips failed to respond to a request for comment.
