A warning has been issued to be on the look-out for scammers after the city council revealed a spate of attempted scams.

Oxford City Council is warning residents across the city to keep vigilant and not let scammers spoil Christmas.

The city council said that there had recent reports of phone calls from people claiming to be from the council and asking for personal information.

E-mail scams have also been reported, with one notable example claiming to be a council tax refund from HMRC.

Deputy leader of the council Ed Turner said: "Oxford City Council operates a highly effective anti-fraud team that works in partnership with the police, the National Anti-Fraud Network and other agencies to combat this kind of fraud.

"The team investigates all instances of possible scams reported to them.

“These hoaxes can be convincing and it pays to be careful.

"A little vigilance can go a long way in keeping you safe from scams.”
