A WILDLIFE park has sealed off some areas of the site after a recent outbreak of bird flu in Europe.

Cotswold Wildlife Park in Burford announced this afternoon that because of the outbreak staff would be taking some birds off show and closing a number of areas of the park until further notice.

A statement on its Facebook page read: "Due to the recent outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) in Europe, we have taken some precautions to help protect our birds and prevent further spread of the virus.

"Therefore, some bird species may be off show and some areas closed. Closed areas will include the Tropical House, Bird Walkthrough Aviary and part of the South American Walkthrough.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and would like to thank you for your understanding at this time."

Park spokesperson Debbie Ryan said: "Following instructions given by DEFRA, restrictions on birds are now in place throughout the UK as a precaution against avian influenza.

"Whilst it is not yet in the UK, we are required to make some changes to follow DEFRA's advice.

"All other enclosures, except those in the bird walkthrough areas, will remain open."
