TRADITIONAL police constable helmets might be reintroduced to Thames Valley Police.

Police and Crime Commissioner Anthony Stansfeld said they could be brought back into use to make police officers more visible.

Mr Stansfeld told the Times: “It’s a daytime thing, people don’t see the police very often I think.

“The officers are no longer all six foot, we have brains as well as brawn these days.

“I think it would be a good move but that is a personal view and we will do a consultation on it.”

Police federation chairman Graham Smith said in the costs of helmets, when budgets are tight, would have to be ‘strongly considered’.

He added: “I, as an individual, never supported the removal of police helmets as it is a symbol of British policing.

“However I do understand the arguments that it’s an old fashioned piece of uniform.

“I would support a real review of policing uniform throughout Great Britain.

“Just because you want to be practical doesn’t mean you have to be scruffy. It has been a race to the bottom in relation to appearance.

“In relation to police helmets that was raised by the PCC, I suspect that actually it’s not going to happen on cost basis.

“That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t support this wholesale review of a police officer’s uniform.”

TVP discarded helmets in 2009.
