OXFORD City general manager Justin Merritt believes Jonny Giles has a successful future ahead of him in the professional game.

The winger returns to parent club Oxford United after tomorrow’s Vanarama National League South clash with Ebbsfleet United following the conclusion of his 93-day loan.

After a string of impressive displays, Merritt believes Giles has the talent to succeed at a higher level.

“He’s certainly got the ability and his attitude is terrific,” the City boss said.

“I think he just needs a little luck and an opportunity.”

Giles’ departure brings the U’s contingent at City down to three – Robbie Cundy, Josh Ashby and James Roberts.

And while Merritt admitted he would love to bring Giles back in January, he believes the 22-year-old could be destined for bigger things.

He said: “From a selfish point of view I’d like him here, but if he can go on and make a career for himself at that level then that’s fantastic.

“We’ve seen the likes of Ikechi Anya and Garath McCleary go on and have fantastic careers after spending time at Oxford City.

“There’s no reason why Jonny, or any of the other lads we’ve had on loan here, couldn’t do the same thing.”
