Two men are in hospital after their car struck an electricity pole near Wootton this morning.

Motorists are being turned back at the scene in Cumnor Road after the collision involving a VW Golf.

At about midnight the driver and his passenger were both rushed to hospital following the collision.

Police have since closed the road while fallen power cables are made safe and motorists are reporting lengthy delays following the incident.

Thames Valley Police spokesperson Lucy Billen said: "TVP were called at 00.12 today to a report of a single vehicle collision on Cumnor Road, Wootton.

"Both driver and passenger, two local men in their twenties, taken to John Radcliffe Hospital.

"One car, a VW Golf, hit an electricity pole and that has to be made safe before car can be recovered, hence road closure still on."

Firefighters cut away trees and bushes to rescue one of the men.

Firefighter Simon Belcher said: "This is a timely reminder that conditions are getting colder and slippery, drivers should slow down and drive according to the conditions."
