A CHARITY is hoping to spread some smiles over the festive season to children who would not otherwise wake up to a present on Christmas morning.

The Salvation Army has launched its annual present appeal, where they will ask members of the public to donate toys and gifts to then be distributed to families in need.

Last year the charity helped more than 140 families across the county and hope this year they will be able to bring even more joy.

Oxford’s church leader, Major Samantha Johnson, said: "Our band once again has a very popular Christmas carolling spot outside Marks and Spencer on Saturday mornings from 10am to 12noon for the next three weeks in December.

"The money we collect during this time is used to fund food parcels which we distribute ahead of Christmas.

"We will also have a drop-in to donate toys so we can give and help as many people this holiday.

"We also want to thank the generous Oxford public who make this possible year on year as well as Tesco Cowley store from where we always buy the food for the parcels."

The drop-in donation will be on Tuesday December 12 at the South Oxford Christian Centre in Wytham Street between 2pm and 4pm.

After last years appeal the charity were able to work together with other agencies and a refuge to donate surplus toys.

Every year a team of about 20 volunteers, the majority of whom are Salvation Army members, ensure the operation runs smoothly and this is the third year Major Johnson has run the appeal.

She says that in the past some of the gems to have been donated included 'Frozen' dolls from the popular Disney franchise and a rare Playmobil play set.

She added: "The generosity of people is extraordinary and uplifting.

"We have a growing group of regular donors: schools, businesses and churches, as well as individuals who collect toys on our behalf.

"These are difficult times for many families and the more that we collect, the more we can share with them and try to make a difference in their lives particularly at Christmas but also throughout the year.

"Christmas donations are used to ensure that the Salvation Army can be present in Oxford throughout the year giving help where it is needed."

The Salvation Army band will also be involved in carol services at Helen and Douglas House, the John Radcliffe Hospital and will be at the Christmas light switch on in Blackbird Leys.
