FOUR businessmen from Oxfordshire are driving an old Jaguar more than 2,000 miles to the Rock of Gibraltar to raise funds for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Gareth Bressington, Brian Donnelly, Bryan Murray, and Mark Halstead bought a 1996 Jaguar XJ and set off from the Rock of Gibraltar pub near Kidlington on Thursday.

After shaking their poppy tins en route, they will sell the vehicle in Gibraltar and attend a Remembrance Sunday service in Gibraltar before flying back to the UK.

Property developer Mr Bressington, 46, from Oxford, said: "We will stop in Normandy to see the D-Day beaches and then head onto the Loire Valley, Zaragoza and Benidorm before we reach Gibraltar.

"It's a five-day trip and we will sell the Jag when we get there - it might fetch about £450.

"My dad Sheldon Bressington, who is 81, was in the Royal Navy between 1948 and 1960 and served in Suez so I know what a good cause the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal is.

"It's vital we remember the sacrifice made by those who served in the two world wars and conflicts and this trip is a way of showing our support.

"The RBL is not just about the Poppy Appeal, it is about helping serving and retired members of our Armed Forces and their families.

"Many military personnel never ask for help - any donation, big or small will help."

Mr Bressington, who is aiming to raise a total of £1,000, added that the Jaguar broke down several times on the A34 before they set off.

So far £450 has been raised for a JustGiving target of £515.

RBL community fundraiser for Oxfordshire Mark Garwood said the journey to Gibraltar was a 'tremendous effort'.
