CHURCHGOERS from Blackbird Leys put their best foot forward to raise cash for a series of new projects carried out at their church.

About 15 people took part in the sponsored walk from Folly Bridge to Sandford Lock to help Sacred Heart Catholic Church fundraise for double-glazed windows.

Fr Nazarius Mgungwe, of the church in Sawpit Road, said as well as windows the money may help towards a rather more unusual cause: building work on the church in 2017 to include a 'crying corner' for mothers with young babies taking part in Mass.

He said: "We definitely need to put some windows in but we may need to do a little bit of an extension to the church as well.

"I'm thinking of creating a corner where mothers with babies can come and have their space. We will create a 'crying corner'.

"We could have some kind of glass so that people in the church will not share in the crying."

In January next year the church committee will work out the budget for both projects.

Funds from the walk on October 2 are still being counted up. Fr Nazarius said: "It went very well and the weather was beautiful. It was a lovely Sunday."

In the meantime years of fundraising for CCTV cameras for the church have finally come to fruition, with the extra security measures due to be installed next week.
